**ORAL SURGERY CONSULATION SUMMARY** [DATE] Surgeon: Dr.[Insert surgeon's name] Dear [patient_name], It was a pleasure meeting with you during your recent visit for a consultation regarding [insert reason for consultation]. Your well-being is our top priority, and we want to ensure you have all the information you need for your surgical needs. Summary of Consultation: [insert reason for visit] [insert clinical and radiological findings from exam] Diagnosis: [insert diagnosis] Recommendation: [insert recommendations and different treatment options if there are different options] Anesthetic Options: • Local Anesthesia: This option keeps you awake during the procedure. You will receive injections to numb the area, preventing pain but you will feel pressure and pushing. You will also hear a lot of noise. • Laughing Gas: Inhaled through the nose, it relaxes you without putting you to sleep. You will feel light-headed and relaxed. • Sedation: Administered via IV, this option allows you to sleep through the procedure. This is different from general anesthetic as you do not need a breathing tube. You will have a deep sleep and will not experience anything during the procedure. • General Anesthetic: Will be performed in another facility by an anesthesiologist. Risks and Benefits: Potential risks include infection, bleeding, damage to teeth/and or other structures, sinus involvement, and nerve involvement, which may cause temporary numbness or tingling. These are rare, and permanent effects are even rarer. [Summarize any other risks discussed] Preparation for Sedation: - If you choose sedation for the procedure, do not eat or drink anything for 8 hours before the procedure and arrange for someone responsible to take you home afterwards. No driving for 24 hours. [Otherwise include personalized plan for the patient] Post-procedure Care: [Summary of post-operative expectation and care instructions] - After the procedure, you may experience swelling, soreness, and bruising, which are normal and will go away with time. Pain and swelling typically is most intense during the first 3 days post-surgery. You will need to rest and avoid strenuous exercise for 3 to 7 days depending on the extent of your surgery. Typically you will have resorbable stitches dissolve after 5 to 7 days. Follow the recovery instructions provided by the surgeon. Detailed post-operative instructions will be provided on the day of surgery. We understand that navigating healthcare information can be overwhelming, so please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. Your well-being is a collaborative effort, and we are here to support you every step of the way. Important Contact Information: [insert phone number] After-Hours Emergency Contact: Listen to the recorded message for instructions on how to reach the on-call surgeon. Please note that this patient handout is a general informational summary and cannot encompass every potential risk, complication, or clinical situation. It does not list every possible risk or outcome, as each patient’s situation is unique. We encourage you to contact us with any questions. We look forward to seeing you for your surgical appointment.
